There are moments in life when community, tradition, and a little sweetness come together in the most meaningful ways. Attending this year’s St. Sava Gala as both a guest and a sponsor was one of those moments for me, and I’m honored to share my experience.
The St. Sava Gala: A Night of Unity and Purpose
The gala, held at the elegant St. Regis Chicago, is more than a social event—it’s the highlight of the Serbian-American community’s calendar. It brings together families, friends, and supporters from across the Midwest and beyond, all united by a shared commitment to preserving our culture and supporting the future of Serbian education in America.
The evening’s purpose is deeply meaningful: to raise funds for St. Sava Academy, the only Serbian Orthodox school in the United States with a dual curriculum. The Academy is a pillar of our community, nurturing not just academic excellence but also faith, language, and cultural identity. This year’s gala achieved record-breaking donations, a testament to the generosity and unity of our community.
Walking Into the Gala: Pride and Gratitude
As the owner of Balkan Bakery, I’ve always believed that food is more than nourishment—it’s a way to connect, to share our stories, and to celebrate our heritage. Walking into the gala, surrounded by the warmth and energy of so many familiar faces, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude. It was an honor to represent our bakery and the vibrant Balkan community that inspires everything we do.

A Night of Celebration and Giving
The gala program was filled with highlights: moving prayers, stirring speeches, and unforgettable performances by renowned musicians. The silent auction buzzed with excitement, and the presence of Serbian diplomats and community leaders added to the sense of occasion. There was a palpable feeling of unity and purpose—everyone was there to support the Academy and invest in the future of our children.
Sharing a Sweet Gift for Every Guest
This year, I wanted our sponsorship to feel personal. That’s why we prepared mini to-go boxes, each filled with an assortment of our handmade treats. Every box was carefully packed in our La Grange kitchen, using recipes passed down through generations and the finest ingredients we can source. Seeing guests’ faces light up as they received their boxes was pure joy—my hope was that each bite would remind them of home, family, or a cherished celebration.

Why Giving Back Matters to Me
Supporting the gala wasn’t just about business—it was about giving back to a community that has welcomed me and Balkan Bakery with open arms. I truly believe that every event, big or small, becomes more memorable when it’s infused with a little care and a lot of flavor. Whether you enjoyed our pastries at the gala or visit us in La Grange, I want every experience to feel special.

Looking Ahead: The Power of Community
The St. Sava Gala reminded me that when we come together, we can achieve incredible things. The funds raised will help expand and modernize the Academy, ensuring that future generations can learn, grow, and celebrate their heritage with pride. I am grateful to have played a small part in this important mission.
